Inspired by a hike through the clouds during my residency with the Sitka Conservation Society.
This part of Alaska is home to the Tongass National Forest, which absorbs more carbon than any other National Forest. It's one of the few resources we have against climate change that automatically works without needing research, development or implementation. A rare environmental resource that works best if we simply do nothing but let it exist.
While the clouds on this hike obscured the mountain views, it made me stop and appreciate the lush fields of wildflowers growing on the mountainside. Not being able to see the mountains on the horizon made me appreciate the mountain I was on.
This piece reminds me that it's okay to not always know what's ahead and that I'm right where I'm supposed to be.
10% of proceeds from this piece will go to the Sitka Conservation Society to help with their mission to protect the Tongass National Forest and the communities that rely on it.
